How to read the chart

Each row is one conversion. Take 250 mcg: go across and you get 0.25 mg. The rule behind every row is the same:

mg = mcg ÷ 1,000

The second table runs the other way, from milligrams to micrograms. There the rule is mcg = mg × 1,000.

The tables were made by the same math as the mcg to mg converter, so no number was typed by hand. If your value is not in a table, the converter takes any number. For milligrams first, use the mg to mcg converter.

Spot the pattern

Look down the micrograms column and you will see the point move three places each time:

  • 5 mcg is 0.005 mg
  • 50 mcg is 0.05 mg
  • 500 mcg is 0.5 mg
  • 5,000 mcg is 5 mg

Each time the micrograms go up ten times, so do the milligrams. Once you see this, you can check any row in your head.

Tips for printing and using the chart

  • Press the print button under the tables. The page prints without the menu and footer.
  • Keep the units next to the numbers when you copy a value. "0.25" alone could mean mg or g.
  • Write a zero before the point, like 0.25 mg, and not .25 mg. The medication safety group ISMP gives this advice, because a lost point can turn 0.25 into 25.
  • Use a comma in numbers of 1,000 and up. ISMP gives this advice too, so the zeros are easy to count.

The tables show number conversions only. They are not amounts to take. For how mg and mcg relate, see mg vs mcg. For grams, see mg to g.
