Mg vs mL

Mg vs mL is a match up of two different kinds of unit. A milligram (mg) measures mass, which is how much stuff there is. A milliliter (mL) measures volume, which is how much space it takes up.

Mass and volume are not the same thing

Think of a cup of feathers and a cup of sand. Both fill the same cup, so the volume is the same. The sand has far more mass.

Mg and mL work the same way. A milligram tells you the mass and a milliliter tells you the space, so two things with the same volume can have very different masses.

NIST, the US measurement lab, lists the milliliter as the same as one cubic centimeter. A medication safety group, ISMP, asks people to write mL and not cc, because cc can be misread.

Why you cannot convert mg to mL on its own

To go from mass to volume, you need to know how much mass sits in each bit of volume. That link is called the concentration. Without it, any mg to mL answer is a guess.

This is why a mg to mL calculator always asks for one more number. A converter like the one on our mg to mcg page can switch mg to mcg or to grams, because those are all mass. It cannot switch mass to volume.

What mg/mL means

You read mg/mL as "milligrams per milliliter". It tells you how many milligrams of something are in each milliliter of liquid. The slash means "per", or "in each".

The higher the number, the more is packed into each mL. A liquid at 10 mg/mL holds twice as much in each mL as one at 5 mg/mL.

When a liquid's label gives its mg/mL, the label is the place to look. This site does not do liquid medicine math, and it never works out how much of a liquid to use.

The water example

Plain water is the one case most people know. The kilogram was first defined as the mass of one liter of water, NIST says. A liter is 1,000 mL and a kilogram is 1,000 g. So 1 mL of water has a mass of about 1 g, which is about 1,000 mg.

That only works for water. Oil, syrup or any mix has a different mass for the same volume. Even water is "about", because its mass per mL shifts a little with temperature.

Mg and mL next to the other units

  • Mass units step by 1,000: g, mg, mcg, ng. See mg to g and mg vs mcg.
  • Volume units step by 1,000 too: 1 L is 1,000 mL.
  • You can cross from one group to the other only with a concentration.

Questions

Is mg the same as mL?

No. Mg is a unit of mass and mL is a unit of volume. They measure different things, so they are not the same.

How many mg are in 1 mL?

It depends on the liquid. For plain water, 1 mL has a mass of about 1 g, or about 1,000 mg. For anything else, you need its concentration in mg/mL.

Can you convert mg to mL?

Not on its own. You need the concentration, written in mg/mL, to link the mass to the volume.

What does mg/mL mean?

It means milligrams per milliliter: how many mg of something are in each mL of liquid.

What is the difference between mg and mL?

A milligram measures mass and a milliliter measures volume. A mg is one thousandth of a gram. A mL is one thousandth of a liter.

Is mL bigger than mg?

They cannot be compared, because one is volume and one is mass. It is like asking if a mile is bigger than an hour.
