How to convert mcg to mg

  1. Start with the number in micrograms.
  2. Divide it by 1,000. That moves the decimal point three places to the left.
  3. Write the unit as mg.

A whole number has a point at its end that you do not see. So 750 is the same as 750.0. Move the point three places left and you get 0.750, which you write as 0.75.

Going the other way is the mg to mcg converter on the home page. There you multiply by 1,000.

Worked examples

Micrograms (mcg)Divide by 1,000Milligrams (mg)
2020 ÷ 1,0000.02
125125 ÷ 1,0000.125
600600 ÷ 1,0000.6
1,2001,200 ÷ 1,0001.2
3,0003,000 ÷ 1,0003

Look at the small numbers. Anything under 1,000 mcg is less than 1 mg, so the answer starts with 0 and a point. If your answer for 20 mcg came out as 2 mg or 0.2 mg, the point moved too few places.

For more rows, see the mcg to mg conversion chart. It lists values from 1 mcg to 10,000 mcg and prints on one page.

Check your answer

Two quick checks catch most slips:

  • Count the places. The point always moves three places. Not two, not four.
  • Size check. The mg number is always the smaller number. 750 mcg turns into 0.75 mg, never 750,000 mg.

The units matter more than the numbers. 5 mcg and 5 mg look close on paper, but 5 mg is 1,000 times more. The guide to mg vs mcg shows the two units side by side.

Why some labels use mcg

Very small amounts are easier to read in micrograms. "400 mcg" has no point to miss. The same amount in milligrams is "0.4 mg", and a point is easy to lose. US labels use mcg for some vitamins. For vitamin D, mcg is the unit the FDA requires on US food and supplement labels.

A medication safety group, ISMP, also asks people to write "mcg" and not "µg". A handwritten µ can look like an m. Read more in what is mcg.
